Case Studies
South Carolina Ports Authority
The Mainsaver Solution
After an extensive evaluation, The Ports Authority chose the Mainsaver CMMS system. The purchase coincided with the purchase of PeopleSoft®, an enterprise financial software suite, as well as the installation of a large, enterprise-wide client/server system linking several small LANs into a cohesive WAN. The Ports Authority contracted with Mainsaver to interface the CMMS with PeopleSoft. Besides the core Mainsaver modules, the Shop Floor, Route Management, and Preventive Maintenance modules were also installed to monitor work-in-progress, parts and material usage, and personnel allocation.
Benefits
After just ten months, Mainsaver has revolutionized the seaport's maintenance operations. Corrective, preventive, and small-project work orders are now generated by the system. Users can create a parts or materials purchase order request in Mainsaver, which automatically transfers the information electronically to PeopleSoft. Supervisors can instantly view parts on-order, resource availability, and the history of any work order. Data can be downloaded to Microsoft Excel® so that supervisors can easily build spreadsheets for cost studies and special reporting. Queries can be quickly defined and sorted, easily allowing changes in parameters and sorts, if necessary. Mainsaver's user-friendly Shop Floor module was configured to operate from a touch-screen, allowing craftspeople to easily create work orders, and have instant access to equipment history, job details, parts, and work status. The Route Management module allows maintenance personnel to generate an efficient work routine covering an unlimited number of machines requiring the same service tasks. The Preventive Maintenance module allows supervisors to determine appropriate work schedules for routine maintenance tasks, then make that information available for parts ordering, routing, and pre-planning. All of the planning for large construction projects is now all done in Mainsaver. The system orders and bills for materials, calculates the amount of labor needed, creates a work schedule, and oversees overall job progress. The Ports Authority is realizing efficiency increases that were impossible before its implementation. For instance, the entire parts inventory is stored in servers, and the actual parts are now kept in satellite storerooms strategically located in the maintenance shops at all four of the Charleston terminals. Previously, maintenance supervisors would often hoard parts to ensure availability for routine jobs. Now, a parts requisition system allows craftspeople to issue their own parts at satellite locations through the Mainsaver Shop Floor module, and if parts are in stock, they can get them the same day. As an indicator of the efficiency Mainsaver provided The Ports Authority, the goal was to have the Mainsaver investment be recouped about six months after installation. However, it was recently determined that the investment was recouped in only three months!
