Press Release
Palm Beach Resource Recovery Corporation implements
Mainsaver upgrade
San Diego, CA, Sept. 12, 2007 –Palm Beach Resource Recovery Corporation (PBRRC) is a power generation facility that reduces the amount of waste that goes to the county landfill by more than 60 percent. The facility processes roughly 2,000 tons of trash and produces approximately 50 megawatts of electricity each day.
Operated under contract by The Babcock & Wilcox Company, PBRRC has used Mainsaver for over 10 years to help manage corrective work orders, preventive maintenance, and various purchasing operations. In 2007, a number of upgrades were made to enhance the use of Mainsaver throughout the facility, including adding a new database server, upgrading the database manager from Oracle 8i to Oracle 10g, and upgrading Mainsaver from version 6 to version 10.
As part of the upgrade, PBRRC introduced a new asset structure that improved the process for users to enter work orders and issue asset numbers. After a more consistent asset number scheme was developed for use across the plant, Mainsaver made it easy to delete old asset numbers and renumber existing assets.
Materials Management
The upgrade was helpful in improving the facility’s materials management process, as well. PBRRC personnel realized they were spending a great deal of money on consumable supplies such as gloves and welding rod and wanted to see if savings were available in these areas. Past data was analyzed and the results showed the need for additional controls to reduce consumption of these parts. Mainsaver was used to create reports that identified the high-consumption MRO materials and summarized where these items were being used.
Corrective and Preventive Maintenance
Mainsaver has also had a positive effect on corrective and preventive maintenance activities at PBRRC. The facility generates about 50 corrective and preventive work orders each day, which are entered by Operations or Maintenance Personnel. They are then closed by Maintenance technicians once they have been addressed.
With Mainsaver, Maintenance supervisors can constantly manage the backlog of work orders using the system’s queries and reports feature. They can also track time and materials used to specific work orders and generate summaries of the maintenance activity.
The system has also been helpful in allowing Maintenance personnel to monitor 13 key performance indicators that the leadership team uses to manage the operations of the facility. With Mainsaver, the Maintenance supervisors can carefully schedule preventive maintenance activities and help ensure that key indicators like boiler availability and process line availability are met or exceeded.
Implementation
Mainsaver provided on-site services during the Oracle and Mainsaver upgrade, assisting with the development of standard operating procedures and employee training, and working closely with PBRRC employees to ensure the implementation was a success.
About PBRRC:
The Palm Beach Resource Recovery Corporation facility was designed to reduce the volume of the county’s wastes, generate electricity, and maximize the recovery of aluminum and ferrous metals. It is comprised of three operating plants: a refuse derived fuel (RDF) processing plant, a combustion plant which includes pollution control equipment, and a turbine generator plant. The facility, which encompasses approximately 40 acres of a 1,320-acre Authority-owned tract, employs approximately 160 full-time employees, and approximately 60 full-time contract workers.
